Vicious Compliance in Alberta: When Words (and Policies) Miss the Mark

In Alberta right now, queer and trans folks are facing some of the harshest attacks on our rights in years. From education restrictions to dangerous health policies, the message is clear: our lives, our families, and our futures are being used as political chess pieces.

Premier Danielle Smith has made herself the face of these policies, and yet, in her recent attempt to score points in a political debate, she called out “vicious compliance.” Of course, what she meant was malicious compliance  (a well-known phrase for when people follow bad rules to the letter to prove how absurd they are).

But here’s the thing: Smith got it wrong.

She regurgitated words she didn’t understand, twisted them into something else, and spoke with confidence anyway. Sound familiar? That slip-up is more than just a meme-able moment. It’s a reflection of leadership that doesn’t listen, doesn’t learn, and doesn’t care about accuracy when real lives are at stake.

Just like her misuse of language, Smith’s policies show a dangerous pattern: creating laws without understanding their consequences, parroting rhetoric without compassion, and leading without true accountability.

And so, in the spirit of true vicious compliance, we’ve reclaimed it. We’ve turned her mistake into a symbol of queer resistance, creativity, and humour.
